Nelson Place Elementary School
Key Features
- The City of Worcester needed a new 600-student school for Pre-K through 6th grade neighborhood elementary school that could accommodate a large population of students with disabilities, including half of all students with autism from across the district
- The new school features flexible, moveable furniture and lighting to accommodate different learning and teaching styles as well as a variety of technologies to enhance and support learners of all abilities
- The City also made a commitment to environmental sustainability, targeting net zero energy, as part of a bigger Climate Action Plan to reduce Worcester’s energy use and greenhouse gas emissions
- The new school is twice the size of the former school and yet is projected to use half the energy
- Nelson Place achieved LEED Silver. The scorecard is on the USGBC website
