The feasibility study for Worcester’s Burncoat High School is now underway. This April, LPA|A was selected by the MSBA and representatives from the Worcester Public School District to begin the process of replacing, or significantly renovating, the final high school project for the city for the foreseeable future. This will be the firm’s fourth high school project in partnership with the City of Worcester.

The work kicked off with a series of visioning workshops, tours through recently completed middle and high schools throughout the state, and a thorough review of existing conditions at the high school and adjacent middle school, which is also being studied for potential consolidation to a 7-12 school.

As a comprehensive high school, and the district’s magnet school for performing, visual, and media arts, Burncoat has some unique needs for specialized spaces. The visioning workshops and community forums held over several weeks though May and June elicited input from the school community as well as the broader Worcester community.

These meetings explored the hopes and priorities for the school, encouraging participants to voice concerns but also think expansively about the potential for a reimagined Burncoat.
