Recreational Spaces

Whether public parks or private clubs, having a place to be active and play is beneficial for people of all ages. Outdoor spaces that are visually appealing, with a mix of open spaces and dedicated recreational services or structures, contribute to healthier communities. LPA|A has worked with the City of Worcester many times to update and design facilities for their popular parks, and private country clubs in central Massachusetts have taken advantage of the firm’s expertise to help them attract and retain members with desirable and modern amenities. It is especially important in recreational design to consider the landscape to create an experience that will enhance the enjoyment of the natural environment.

A Place to Play in All Seasons

The City of Worcester asked LPA|A to design a new splash pad and oval skating rink at East Park. The splash pad with colorful play structures helps visitors stay cool in the summer, while an oval skating rink surrounding the splash pad provides more family fun in the winter months. A heated pavilion keeps skaters warm while they rest, and a new support building features a control center, storage space, first aid area, and restrooms.

In Service to the Community

Recreation Worcester in the City of Worcester offers recreational, educational, and enrichment opportunities through summer camps and after-school programs.  LPA|A and Fontaine Brothers wanted to support the program and encouraged all the companies that had worked on the Nelson Place Elementary Project to donate, raising enough to fund a site for a summer. Through the firms’ work in close collaboration with the community, they have seen both the need and value of programs like Recreation Worcester. More recently LPA|A staff volunteered directly with elementary students for the after-school program.
